TLDR Coal tar shampoo increases enzyme activity in hair follicles, enhancing carcinogen binding to DNA.
This study investigated the metabolism of carcinogens benzo[a]pyrene (BP) and benzo[a]pyrene-7,8-diol (BP 7,8-diol) in human hair follicles and the effect of a coal tar-containing (CCT) shampoo on these processes. Twelve healthy volunteers used the shampoo daily for 4 days, resulting in increased enzyme activity (50-148%) in 10 of them, which enhanced the binding of BP to DNA. The study also found that clotrimazole and ketoconazole significantly inhibited this enzyme activity. These findings suggested that hair follicles are a viable tissue for studying PAH metabolism and that imidazole compounds could potentially act as anticarcinogens.
