Distribution of Human Beta-Defensin 2, TNF-Alpha, IL-1 Alpha, IL-6, and IL-8 in Psoriatic Skin

    The study evaluated the expression of human beta defensin 2, TNF-alpha, and interleukins 1 alpha, 6, and 8 in skin biopsies from 14 patients with Psoriasis vulgaris. The researchers found that IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha were the most common cytokines present in psoriatic skin lesions. Defensin-containing cells were present in all samples, ranging from few to abundant, while TNF-alpha positive cells varied from few to numerous. IL-1 alpha was poorly expressed, whereas IL-6 and IL-8 showed a range from few to abundant positive structures. The study concluded that these cytokines and antimicrobial proteins play a significant role in the pathology of psoriatic skin.
