Histological Evaluation of Hair Keratin Based Templates in Mice

    Brennan Kiah Hui Lee
TLDR Keratin sponges are as biocompatible as collagen, but keratin gels are slightly less so.
The study evaluated the biocompatibility of human hair keratin-based templates in mice using histological techniques. Two types of keratin templates, gel and sponge, were compared to a commercially available collagen control. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunoperoxidase staining were used to assess tissue integration, vascularization, cell penetration, degradation, inflammation, and extracellular matrix formation. Results indicated that keratin gels had slightly inferior biocompatibility compared to the control, while keratin sponges showed comparable biocompatibility. Although the findings were not conclusive, they suggested potential for keratin in biomedical applications, warranting further research.
