TLDR Heat damages hair, with Asian hair losing more protein than Caucasian hair.
This study evaluated the effects of heat on the cuticle and cortex of Caucasian and Asian virgin hair using various analytical techniques. Results showed that heating caused significant damage, including denaturation of α-keratin and degradation of hair cortex components. Protein loss was greater in Asian hair compared to Caucasian hair. The study highlighted the importance of temperature control in hair-straightening procedures, as the extent of damage varied with hair ethnicity.
