Crystallin Fusion Proteins Improve the Thermal Properties of Hair

Ana Tinoco, José Aı́lton Gonçalves, Carla Silva, Artur Cavaco‐Paulo
TLDR Fusion proteins can protect hair from heat damage.
The study investigated the use of crystallin fusion proteins, specifically KP-Cryst Wt and KP-Cryst Mut, to enhance the thermal properties of hair. Researchers found that these proteins significantly improved hair's resistance to heat damage by preserving structure, increasing water retention, and reducing mechanical degradation when exposed to high temperatures. The proteins formed protective film-like structures on hair fibers, with the best results observed at pH5. These findings suggested potential applications in hair care products to protect against thermal damage from styling tools, offering a promising avenue for maintaining hair health and integrity.
