TLDR Southeast and East Asian men typically have straighter hairlines with less recession and lower hair density, which is important to consider in hair restoration surgery.
In 2016, a study was conducted on 209 Oriental men from Southeast and East Asia to understand the characteristics of naturally occurring hairlines and their application in hair restoration surgery. The research found that these individuals typically have a straighter hairline with less temporal recession and lower hair density compared to other ethnic groups. The average frontal hairline density was 77.8 FU/cm2 and 110 hairs/cm2, and it was found that hair density decreases as men age. The height of the hairline in non-AGA men did not change significantly with age. The most common hairline shapes were upsloping (55.5%) and straight (35.4%), and the hair direction flowed from left to right in 59.8% of the cases. A widow’s peak was found in only 47.4% of men, and most did not have any lateral mounds (66%). The study emphasized the importance of understanding these characteristics for better application in hair restoration surgery.
