TLDR Hair Heat Disease is caused by wet, oily hair and friction in hot, humid conditions.
Mudichood dermatosis, also known as Hair Heat Disease, is a dermatological condition typically found in southern India, particularly Kerala, but has been reported in two women from Pune, Maharashtra. This condition arises from a nonspecific follicular reaction to wet and oily hair in a hot, humid environment, combined with friction between hair and skin. The women presented with itchy, raised lesions on their upper backs, linked to their hair care practices involving daily application of hair oil and tying their hair in a way that caused friction. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination and dermoscopy, revealing a distinctive "cut section of a Kiwi fruit" appearance. Treatment included topical corticosteroids, tretinoin gel, and oral antihistamines. The study highlights that similar hair care practices can lead to Mudichood dermatitis beyond its typical geographical boundaries.
