TLDR Systemic corticosteroids may effectively treat follicular mucinosis.
Three new cases of follicular mucinosis (alopecia mucinosa) were reported, showing characteristic changes in hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and mucinous degeneration of the dermis. One case indicated that dermal mucin might differ from follicular mucin, containing glycoprotein rather than acid mucopolysaccharides. Due to the high rate of spontaneous regression, evaluating therapy response is challenging, but one case showed a rapid response to systemic corticosteroids, suggesting potential effectiveness.
