TLDR Phyllanthus niruri extract may help treat hair loss by promoting hair growth and blocking a hair loss-related enzyme.
In 2015, a study was conducted on albino rats to examine the hair growth promoting potential of Phyllanthus niruri (P. niruri) extracts. The results showed that the petroleum ether extract of P. niruri stimulated hair re-growth, as indicated by increased follicular density and anagen/telogen ratio. The extract also inhibited the activity of type-2 5α-reductase enzyme, which is responsible for converting testosterone to a more potent compound that causes hair loss. Therefore, the study concluded that P. niruri extracts could be useful in treating testosterone-induced alopecia by inhibiting the 5α-reductase enzyme.
