Survey of Hair Growth Stimulation Effects of Total Ethanol Extract from Perilla Frutescens Leaf Powder on Swiss Albino Mice with Testosterone-Induced Hair Loss

This study evaluated the hair growth stimulation effects of Perilla frutescens leaf extract on Swiss albino mice experiencing hair loss due to testosterone. Testosterone at 1.0 mg/day, administered 5 days a week, significantly reduced hair growth, decreasing hair follicles by about 35% on Days 18 and 36. Treatment with Perilla leaf extract or minoxidil significantly increased hair growth and follicle count compared to the untreated group. Microscopic analysis showed that the number of hair follicles in the Perilla and minoxidil groups was 2.5 and 3.9 times higher, respectively, than in the untreated group, with an anagen/telogen ratio of 2.48 ± 0.82 and 3.37 ± 0.3 compared to 0.08 ± 0.03 in the untreated group. The study concludes that Perilla leaf extract effectively stimulates hair growth, comparable to minoxidil.
