TLDR George Ernest Rogers was a notable scientist who made important discoveries about hair and wool proteins.
George Ernest Rogers was a renowned scientist recognized for his significant contributions to the understanding of keratins and the process of keratinization. His pioneering work included the use of electron microscopy to study hair and wool structure, the discovery of citrulline in keratin proteins, and the identification of key enzymes involved in keratin formation such as transglutaminase and peptidylarginine deiminase. He was the first to demonstrate ribosomal-dependent keratin protein synthesis in 1965, leading to extensive research on hair keratin protein biosynthesis. His work also paved the way for the molecular analysis of feather follicle development and the cloning and characterization of avian and wool keratin genes. His achievements were recognized with a DSc from the University of Adelaide in 1977 and an appointment as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2013.
