TLDR Certain genetic changes in the KAP22-1 gene are linked to better wool quality in Egyptian sheep.
The study focused on the relationship between genetic variations in the KAP22-1 gene and wool characteristics in 262 Egyptian sheep from three breeds: Barki, Rahmani, and Ossimi. It identified three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and found significant associations between these genetic variants and wool traits such as crimp percentage, staple length, kemp score, and greasy color grade. The BB genotype was linked to more favorable wool traits. The research suggests that the KAP22-1 gene could be a useful genetic marker for improving wool traits in Egyptian sheep through selective breeding programs.
