TLDR The fish oil-based gel with imiquimod improves skin cancer treatment and reduces inflammation.
The study characterized a novel fish oil-based bigel system for topical drug delivery and evaluated its immunomodulatory effects when combined with imiquimod against skin cancer. The bigel, composed of carbopol hydrogel and fish oil oleogel, demonstrated superior drug availability in the skin compared to traditional gels. Ex vivo and in vivo tests showed that the imiquimod-fish oil bigel enhanced antitumor effects, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-6), and increased anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, thereby potentially mitigating imiquimod-induced inflammation and inhibiting tumor progression. This combination could be beneficial for treating skin cancer and controlling associated inflammatory side effects.
