TLDR Ficus carica extract improved fertility in rats and may help with certain health conditions.
The study explored the impact of Ficus carica (FC) extract on the reproductive health and capabilities of male and female albino Wistar rats, finding that the extract, administered at 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg doses over 90 days, significantly enhanced fertility in both sexes without adverse effects. In males, sperm production and levels of reproductive hormones such as FSH, LH, estradiol, DHT, DHEAS, and insulin increased, while in females, increases in FSH, LH, estradiol, DHEAS, and prolactin suggested improved ovulation and benefits for lactation. The FC extract also upregulated antioxidant enzyme gene expression, indicating potential health benefits beyond fertility, such as treating dengue fever by increasing platelet and RBC counts. The study concludes that FC extract can improve fertility and may be beneficial for conditions like andropause, menopause, and dengue fever, but human studies are necessary to confirm these findings for clinical use.
