Studysummary This study found that a photometric flow titration using KMnO4 and minoxidil provided results comparable to a chromatographic procedure, with recoveries between 97.6% and 102.8% and relative errors of 3.5% to 4.0%. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
This paper describes a photometric flow titration method for quickly and accurately determining the concentration of minoxidil in commercial hair loss products. The method involves a redox reaction between KMnO and minoxidil and was found to be faster and more efficient than chromatographic procedures. The study used Regaine and Neoxidil products, both of which contained 2% minoxidil, and recoveries from 97.6 to 102.8% were observed depending on the sample. The proposed method is a low-cost and easy alternative for determining minoxidil in commercial samples.
