Expression of NAD+-Dependent 15-Hydroxyprostaglandin Dehydrogenase and Protection of Prostaglandins in Human Hair Follicle

The 2008 study focused on the expression of NAD+-dependent 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) in human hair follicles and its potential as a target for hair growth promotion by preserving prostaglandin levels. The enzyme was found to be expressed in melanocytes and keratinocytes within the hair follicle. Through screening over 500 molecules, two compounds were identified that could inhibit 15-PGDH: PhCL28A and a thiazolidine dione derivative, referred to as compound-1. However, only compound-1 was effective in inhibiting 15-PGDH without also decreasing the production of prostaglandin F2α, making it a promising candidate for maintaining prostaglandin levels in the hair follicle and potentially enhancing hair growth. The study did not report the number of human samples used for the investigation.
