TLDR Keratin 33A is a key protein in goat winter coats, especially in high-producing breeds.
The study focused on the expression of the keratin 33A protein in goat coat hair, revealing that it is a major keratin highly expressed in winter coats. Western analysis showed that keratin 33A is specific to hair coat tissues and its expression increased in winter for high-producing Korean native breeds but not in low-producing Saanen breeds. Immunohistochemistry localized keratin 33A in the cortex of cashmere fibers, confirming its role as a structural protein in goat cashmere hair.
