Effect of Various Herbal and Chemical Enhancers on Skin Permeability to Cetirizine: A Study of Changes in Rat Skin Cells

TLDR Eucalyptus and Tween 80 most effectively increase cetirizine skin absorption.
This study investigated the effect of various enhancers on the skin permeability of cetirizine, a hydrophilic antihistamine used in androgenic alopecia treatment. Enhancers such as eucalyptus, menthol, Tween 80, propylene glycol, and oleic acid were tested on rat skin. The results indicated that all enhancers increased cetirizine's permeability compared to water, with mechanisms involving lipid liquefaction, lipid structure destruction, and keratin denaturation. Eucalyptus and Tween 80 were the most effective enhancers, while propylene glycol was the least effective after 2- and 1-hour pre-contact, respectively.
