TLDR Eucalyptus and Tween 80 most effectively increase cetirizine skin absorption.
This study examined the impact of various enhancers on the skin permeability of cetirizine, an antihistamine used for androgenic alopecia treatment. Enhancers such as eucalyptus, menthol, Tween 80, propylene glycol, and oleic acid were tested. Eucalyptus and Tween 80 were the most effective in increasing skin permeability, while propylene glycol was the least effective. The study identified mechanisms like lipid liquefaction, lipid structure destruction, and keratin denaturation as reasons for increased permeability. These results suggest that enhancing cetirizine's topical formulation could improve its absorption.
