TLDR The rat model showed early perimenopause with regular cycles and low hormones, and late perimenopause with irregular cycles and higher hormone levels.
The study investigated the endocrine changes in a VCD-induced perimenopausal rat model, involving 25 rats. VCD treatment led to significant hormonal alterations, including lower AMH and progesterone levels, and normal estradiol, LH, and FSH levels from 70 to 90 days post-treatment. By 100 days, VCD-treated rats exhibited increased FSH and DHT levels, irregular/elongated estrous cycles, and a significant reduction in AMH, indicating the onset of estropause. These findings suggested that VCD treatment accelerated the transition to ovarian failure, mimicking hormonal changes observed in late perimenopausal women, and highlighted the potential of this model for studying perimenopausal endocrine dynamics.
