TLDR Pediatric alopecia areata needs better treatments and psychological support.
The study surveyed 76 physicians in Germany to understand the current management practices and emotional burden of pediatric alopecia areata (AA). Most physicians treated 1-50 children with AA annually, with a significant portion having severe cases like AA totalis or universalis. Topical corticosteroids were the primary treatment, though many physicians were dissatisfied with available options. Emotional impacts on patients included social withdrawal, learning difficulties, and bullying, with some experiencing depressive moods and anxiety. Physicians noted the need for new therapies and guidelines, emphasizing a comprehensive approach that includes psychological support. Future research should explore targeted treatments and integrate psychosocial aspects into care.
