TLDR Many elderly in geriatric homes are overweight and need better nutrition management and education.
The study assessed the nutritional status of 120 elderly individuals aged 65 and above in geriatric homes in Al-Furat Al-Awusat governorates. It found that a significant portion of the sample was overweight, with 53.3% having a high BMI and 55.8% having a high MUAC. Most participants did not use dentures (83.3%), were non-smokers (70%), and were on medication (63.3%). Common signs included easy hair loss and bleaching nails, and many did not regularly consume vitamins and minerals. The study recommended implementing a nutritional system for elderly residents, conducting routine nutritional assessments, and providing nutritional education and supervision by specialized professionals.
