TLDR Topical caffeine improves hair loss intensity, speed, and shedding, and works better with minoxidil/azelaic acid.
A systematic review of randomized controlled and non-randomized trials investigated the efficacy of topical caffeine in male androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study found that the active treatment group showed statistically significant improvement in hair loss intensity, speed of progression of hair loss, and amount of hairs shed while combing compared to placebo and baseline. The study also found that caffeine in combination with minoxidil/azelaic acid was statistically significantly better than minoxidil 5% and placebo. However, the study had limitations in terms of methodology and reporting of results, and more research is needed to assess the efficacy of caffeine as monotherapy.
