The study investigated the effects of Orthosiphon stamineus leaf extract on sebum-related skin imperfections. Researchers found that the extract reduced 5-α reductase type 1 expression in vitro and decreased 5-α reductase activity and squalene production ex vivo. Two clinical studies, one in France with Caucasian volunteers and another in Thailand with Asian volunteers, demonstrated that a cosmetic formula containing 2% Orthosiphon stamineus leaf extract significantly reduced oily skin appearance and pore size, improving complexion evenness and radiance. The results were superior to those of a formula with 1% zinc gluconate, a common ingredient in oily skin care products.
