Effects of Heavy Ions on Rabbit Tissues: Damage to the Forebrain

TLDR Heavy ions cause significant damage to rabbit forebrains, similar to other radiation effects.
In a study on the effects of radiation on rabbit forebrains, New Zealand white rabbits were exposed to single acute doses of 60Co gamma-photons, Ne ions, or Ar ions, or fractionated doses of 60Co gamma-photons. Pathological changes in the forebrain were assessed using histological indices. The study found that the relative biological effectiveness (r.b.e.) of heavy ions for forebrain damage was similar to that for alopecia and cataractogenesis, with damage expression and late deterioration accelerating with increasing LET infinity. Accurate quantification of late deterioration was limited due to experimental design constraints.
