TLDR Both treatments are safe and effective, but anthralin may work better for some patients.
This study evaluated the effects and side effects of topical clobetasol 0.05% and topical anthralin in 40 patients with alopecia areata. Results showed that while both treatments were safe and effective, anthralin had a higher cosmetic response rate, though not significantly different from clobetasol. Patients unresponsive to clobetasol showed better results when switched to anthralin. Neither treatment significantly affected hair follicle count, hair density, anagen rate, or telogen rate. The study suggests that larger patient series are needed to further assess the effectiveness of these treatments.
