TLDR Combining DPCP and anthralin helps regrow hair in some alopecia areata patients.
In a retrospective case series involving 32 alopecia areata patients unresponsive to diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) alone, a combination of DPCP and anthralin over an average of 8.3 months resulted in 40.62% of patients experiencing terminal hair regrowth, with a mean regrowth rate of 41%. Additionally, 27.27% of patients achieved more than 50% terminal hair regrowth. The study found a strong correlation between longer treatment durations and better outcomes (p < 0.001). The most common side effect was bullae (25%), while generalized pruritus was the least frequent (3.1%). The combination therapy was effective for DPCP non-responder AA patients.
