TLDR UVB exposure increases skin proteins for retinoic acid synthesis and shifts their location, possibly affecting skin repair.
The study investigated the impact of acute UVB exposure on retinoid metabolism in the skin, specifically focusing on the expression of retinoic acid metabolism proteins in SKH-1 mice. Results showed that UVB exposure led to increased expression of retinoid synthesis, degradation, and binding proteins, while decreasing the expression of the retinol storage enzyme, LRAT. These changes were observed 48 hours post-exposure and were particularly noted in the more differentiated cells of the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum. The findings suggested that acute UVB exposure enhances retinoic acid synthesis in the epidermis, potentially influencing the repair and normalization processes of UVB-damaged skin.
