TLDR Laparoscopic ovarian drilling helps infertile women with PCOS by improving menstrual regularity, ovulation, and chances of conception, and by changing hormone levels.
The study conducted by Ali F Al-Assadi and colleagues in 2019 evaluated the impact of laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) on the serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH), Lutenizing hormone (LH), and testosterone in 50 patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The results showed that after LOD, 64.6% of the patients started to menstruate regularly, 54.2% ovulated spontaneously, and 18.8% conceived spontaneously within 3 months. The serum levels of AMH, FSH, LH, and testosterone all significantly changed after the surgery. The researchers concluded that LOD is an effective treatment for infertile PCOS patients who are not responding to medical treatment. The operation did not affect the ovarian reserve and the hormonal changes post-operation (decreased LH and testosterone) favored the continuation of pregnancy and lowered the miscarriage rate.
