TLDR Ovarian drilling surgery is not clearly better than medical treatments for PCOS symptoms.
The document reviewed the effectiveness of laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) for symptom relief in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It included 22 randomized controlled trials with 2,278 women, comparing LOD to medical treatments like metformin and clomiphene. The findings indicated that LOD had inconsistent effects on menstrual regularity and androgenic symptoms, with generally low-quality evidence. LOD had fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to some medical treatments. The review highlighted the need for more high-quality research to determine the true efficacy and safety of LOD for PCOS symptom relief.
