TLDR Dermoscopy helps diagnose and differentiate various hair and scalp conditions.
Dermoscopy gained popularity as a diagnostic tool for examining skin and scalp conditions due to its ability to reveal small details and subsurface structures not visible to the naked eye. It was particularly useful in distinguishing between scarring and non-scarring alopecia, and in differentiating conditions such as trichotillomania and alopecia areata, as well as androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Dermoscopy also aided hair transplant surgeons in assessing donor hair quality and density. This chapter provided updated information on dermoscopic findings related to common hair and scalp disorders and its practical applications in hair transplantation.
