TLDR Iron deficiency can cause certain skin issues like eczematous hand and perioral lesions.
This case-series study investigates the dermatological signs of iron deficiency anemia in 26 patients, primarily young females, who exhibited skin lesions such as pallor, koilonychias, and hair loss, as well as unique erythematous, crusted patches on the hands and perioral area. All patients had reduced hematological parameters indicative of iron deficiency anemia, confirmed through serum iron levels. The study ruled out other causes like zinc deficiency and pellagra, identifying the rash as a novel sign of iron deficiency anemia. Treatment with iron supplementation resolved the skin lesions, underscoring the importance of recognizing these symptoms for early diagnosis and management. The study is limited by its single-center design.
