TLDR Zinc, copper, and iron are important for skin health and may help diagnose skin diseases.
The review paper "Zinc, Copper, and Iron in Selected Skin Diseases" discusses the significant role of these trace elements in skin health and their potential as auxiliary tests in dermatology. Abnormal levels of these elements are observed in many skin diseases, including psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, and seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc, the second most important trace element in the human body, is crucial in cell cycle regulation, DNA replication, immune system regulation, and wound healing. Copper is involved in energy metabolism, the oxidation-reduction system, and iron turnover, and has antioxidant potential. Iron is essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails. The paper suggests that skin ultrasonography could be used to assess skin conditions and correlate them with trace element concentrations. However, more research is needed to conclusively determine the role of these trace elements in skin diseases.
