TLDR Tacrolimus is a better option than cyclosporine due to fewer side effects.
This study compared the side effects of cyclosporine and tacrolimus in 100 Yemeni kidney transplant patients, divided into two groups of 50 each, all receiving mycophenolate mofetil and prednisone. The results indicated that cyclosporine was associated with elevated serum bilirubin, gamma glutamyl transferase, and lipid profiles, as well as complications like hirsutism, gum hyperplasia, herpes zoster, Cushing's face, and obesity. In contrast, tacrolimus was linked to diabetes mellitus, hair loss, and gastrointestinal infections but generally had fewer side effects. The study concluded that tacrolimus-based treatment was preferable due to its overall lower incidence of side effects, despite an increased risk of diabetes.
