TLDR Early detection and multidisciplinary management of skin and mouth side effects from breast cancer treatments improve patient outcomes.
This comprehensive review addresses the cutaneous and oral mucosal side effects of breast cancer treatments, emphasizing the importance of early detection, accurate classification, and multidisciplinary management to mitigate these effects. Common side effects include alopecia, mucositis, and hand-foot syndrome, which can significantly impact patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. The review highlights emerging strategies such as nanoparticle-based delivery systems and personalized interventions to reduce toxicity without compromising efficacy. It also underscores the need for patient education and supportive care to enhance the therapeutic experience and adherence in breast cancer patients. Various management strategies, including the use of topical and systemic treatments, are discussed to address skin and nail toxicities, photosensitivity, and other dermatologic adverse events. The integration of precision oncology and genomic profiling has advanced breast cancer treatment but also introduced new mucocutaneous toxicities, necessitating regular monitoring and supportive care.
