TLDR A new classification system for skin cysts was proposed to improve diagnosis.
The document proposed a novel classification of cutaneous adnexal cysts based on their origin in the folliculosebaceous unit and sweat glands. It identified specific characteristics of the cystic structures' epithelial linings to determine their origins: epidermal cysts from the infundibulum, tricholemmal cysts from the isthmus, and steatocystoma, dermoid cyst, and folliculosebaceous hamartoma from the sebaceous duct. Hidrocystoma was linked to sweat glands, and hair matrix cysts to the hair matrix. The classification aimed to simplify the understanding of these cysts' origins and improve diagnostic accuracy.
