TLDR Many people in Saudi Arabia experienced hair loss after COVID-19, especially women, those treated with antivirals, and those with a history of hair shedding.
A cross-sectional study conducted in Saudi Arabia from March to September 2022, involving 392 participants, found that 59.7% experienced hair shedding during or after COVID-19. The study identified three significant risk factors for this hair shedding: being female (increased risk by 198%), undergoing COVID-19 antiviral therapy (increased risk by 220%), and having a history of telogen effluvium (TE, increased risk by 278%). The study also found a significant association between the use of antiviral medication and hair shedding post-COVID-19. While hair loss is not a disabling consequence of COVID-19, it does cause psychological stress impacting patients' quality of life. The study suggests healthcare providers should be aware of these findings for proper patient management and recommends further studies using objective assessment measures for more precise conclusions.
