TLDR The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in untreated hair diseases and showed the importance of teledermatology.
The study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hair diseases using a web-based questionnaire filled out by 563 participants. It found that 27.9% reported telogen effluvium (TE), 2.8% reported scalp alopecia areata (AA), 2.5% reported facial AA, and 19.9% reported seborrheic dermatitis (SD) during the pandemic. There was a significant decrease in seeking dermatological care, with only 2.5-12.5% of participants consulting a dermatologist during the pandemic compared to 15-28% before. The study concluded that the pandemic resulted in a significant number of untreated TE patients and highlighted the potential of teledermatology for patient care during such times. It also predicted a future increase in TE cases due to pandemic-related stress.
