TLDR The research suggests that SFRP2 and PTGDS proteins might be indicators of female pattern hair loss and could contribute to hair loss.
The study aimed to identify molecular biomarkers associated with Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) by analyzing the genetic differences between bald and non-bald hair follicles from 18 FPHL patients. The researchers used next-generation sequencing techniques and found that genes HOXB13, SFRP2, PTGDS, CXCR3, SFRP4, SOD3, and DCN were significantly upregulated in bald hair follicles. Particularly, SFRP2 and PTGDS were consistently highly expressed in all bald hair follicles and their elevated protein levels were confirmed. The study concluded that SFRP2 and PTGDS could be potential biomarkers for FPHL and may play a role in inducing hair loss in this condition.
