TLDR Women in Australia report different signs of facial aging compared to women in the US, UK, and Canada; men with Lichen planopilaris often have hormonal abnormalities and thyroid disease.
In a retrospective review of 99 men diagnosed with Lichen planopilaris (LPP) at the Mayo Clinic between 1992 and 2016, researchers found that the mean and median ages at diagnosis were 47.8 and 48 years, respectively. Seventy-six patients had biopsy-proven disease, with the vertex or crown being the most common site of involvement. Extracranial lichen planus occurred in 21 patients, and dyslipidemia was the most common comorbidity. Notably, 7 patients had a history of prostate cancer, and 8 had hypogonadism or erectile dysfunction, suggesting a potential association of hormonal abnormalities with LPP in men. Thyroid disease, previously associated with LPP, was present in 6.1% of the patients. The study concluded that LPP features among men are now better understood, with hormonal abnormalities and thyroid disease being common comorbidities.
