TLDR Skin-derived stem cells grow faster and are easier to obtain than hair follicle stem cells, but both can become various cell types.
The study compared neural crest-derived stem cells (NCSCs) from human hair follicles (HF) and skin dermis (SD) to evaluate their potential for regenerative medicine. Both HF and SD NCSCs expressed key neural crest markers and demonstrated similar differentiation abilities. However, SD NCSCs exhibited a higher growth rate, more homogeneous marker expression, and produced higher levels of growth factors and cytokines, making them more suitable for large-scale expansion and therapeutic applications. The study involved 5 healthy male donors aged 20 to 28 years and concluded that SD NCSCs might be more efficient for clinical use due to their superior growth characteristics.
