TLDR Chinese patients with alopecia areata value JAK inhibitors but worry about side effects and relapse, highlighting the need for education and support.
This study analyzed 300 social media posts from Chinese adult patients with alopecia areata (AA) to understand their perspectives on Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor therapy. The analysis revealed four main themes: drug information, efficacy and side effects, shared experiences, and treatment choices. Patients showed significant interest in the efficacy and side effects of JAK inhibitors, particularly tofacitinib and baricitinib, and expressed concerns about relapse after discontinuation. The psychological burden of AA and the importance of peer support were also prominent, highlighting the need for psychological counseling and community support. The study emphasizes the importance of patient education, shared decision-making, and empathetic communication in managing AA, and suggests that social media data can provide valuable insights into real-world patient experiences.
