TLDR Houttuynia cordata extract promotes hair growth and could be useful in hair care products.
The study investigated the effects of 70% ethanol extracts from Calendula officinalis flowers, Phellinus linteus fruit bodies, and Houttuynia cordata whole plants on cell viability and hair growth. The extracts were tested on CCD-986 cells, hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC), and 3T3-L1 cells. While most extracts were cytotoxic to CCD-986 cells, they were not harmful to HFDPC. Notably, the H. cordata extract promoted hair growth by enhancing adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells, which is linked to hair regeneration through the secretion of platelet-derived growth factor. The findings suggested that these plant extracts could be beneficial in developing hair care products.
