TLDR New drug targets for hair loss treatment were identified by studying cell interactions in hair follicles.
The study aimed to identify significant immune cell interactions within the hair follicle niche in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) by analyzing scalp biopsies from young men with early-onset AGA and healthy controls. The samples were dissociated into single-cell suspensions, and CD45+ immune cells and CD45-negative cells were subjected to single-cell RNA sequencing. The CellChat algorithm was used to identify significant pathways and intercellular interactions specific to AGA. The study found distinct myeloid subsets in the scalps of AGA patients, while T-cell subsets showed no differences. This research highlights novel targets for drug development and emphasizes the importance of understanding cellular interactions in the hair follicle niche to uncover new pathways and mechanisms for AGA treatment, potentially leading to new drug classes and treatment modalities for AGA and other forms of alopecia.
