Mechanisms of Cell Death Regulation in Hair Regeneration

    Giada Mantellato, Catherin Niemann
TLDR Blocking cell death in hair follicles can lead to impaired hair growth.
This study investigates the role of cell death regulation during the hair follicle (HF) cycle, particularly focusing on the catagen phase. By overexpressing the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 in murine epidermis (Bcl-2EOE mice), researchers blocked the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, resulting in increased HF cell survival and an enlarged bulge compartment. This alteration led to impaired hair regeneration, characterized by delayed anagen entry and hair growth. The findings highlight the necessity of proper cell death regulation for maintaining the hair germ and stem cell niche architecture, providing insights into the mechanisms of cell communication and stem cell activation during hair regeneration.
