TLDR Prednisone may regrow hair in some alopecia areata patients, but has side effects; minoxidil can help limit hair loss.
A 6-week taper of prednisone was found to potentially result in more than 25% hair regrowth in 30% to 47% of patients with alopecia areata, although it came with predictable and transient side effects. Additionally, applying 2% topical minoxidil three times daily appeared to help limit hair loss following steroid treatment.
