TLDR The study concluded that itching and scaling on the face may be caused by a Demodex mite infection.
In 2020, a case study was conducted on a 36-year-old woman from Tabriz, Iran, who presented with severe itching and hyperkeratosis (excessive dandruff) of the cheeks. The patient was found to have a large number of Demodex mites, specifically Demodex folliculorum, also known as hair follicle mite, and Demodex brevis. These mites are more commonly found in women and can cause severe scabies in animals. The study concluded that in patients presenting with scaling and itching, especially in the head and face, the symptoms may be due to a Demodex infection. Therefore, demodicosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis for such patients.
