Demodicosis of Ophthalmic Concern

Frank P. English, William B. Nutting
TLDR Eyelid mites may contribute to eye problems.
The study focused on Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis mites found in the eyelid's hair follicles and sebaceous glands. These mites, in various life stages, consumed epithelial and gland cells, causing follicular distension, hyperplasia, and increased keratinization, which could lead to ocular issues. Heavy infestations of D. brevis could disrupt the tear film's lipid layer and cause granulomas. The research suggested that these mites might play a role in ocular diseases, potentially in conjunction with microorganisms. Further studies were needed to explore their impact and develop prevention and control methods, particularly during their transfer stages.
