TLDR Caesalpinia bonduc seed extracts may help treat enlarged prostate in rats.
The study investigated the effects of Caesalpinia bonduc seed extracts on testosterone propionate-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in male Wistar rats. The rats were divided into five groups: control, BPH-induced, low dose extract treatment, high dose extract treatment, and standard drug treatment with finasteride. The results showed that the seed extracts significantly reduced prostate weight and prostatic index, decreased dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in serum and prostate, and lowered serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels compared to the BPH group. Histopathological analysis revealed improved prostate tissue morphology. The ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts were particularly effective. The study identified active compounds in the extracts, including tocopherols and various sterols and diterpenes. The findings suggest that C. bonduc seed extracts could be a potential new treatment for BPH, marking the first scientific animal study on its use for this condition.
