TLDR Biotin deficiency is not a major cause of Telogen Effluvium hair loss.
The 2020 study "Biotin Deficiency in Telogen Effluvium: Fact or Fiction?" investigated the link between biotin deficiency and Telogen Effluvium, a common hair loss condition. The study involved 60 patients with Telogen Effluvium and 20 control subjects. The researchers found no significant difference in serum biotin levels between the two groups, indicating that biotin deficiency is not a major cause of this type of hair loss. The study also found that biotin deficiency is rare and advised against prescribing biotin supplements for all hair loss cases without a confirmed deficiency. The study suggested further research to evaluate the effects of biotin supplements on hair loss in patients with normal biotin levels. However, the study was limited by a small sample size.
