TLDR Certain gene variations may increase the risk and severity of alopecia areata.
This study investigated the association between DEFB1 gene polymorphisms and alopecia areata (AA) in 50 patients and 50 healthy controls. The results indicated that the DEFB1 rs1800972 genotypes (CG and GG) were significant predictors of more severe AA (p<0.001). The findings suggested that DEFB1 gene polymorphisms might influence the risk and severity of AA, with the CG, GG genotypes, and G allele being associated with increased susceptibility and severity of the condition.
